UPDATE: Following the changes made by Howrse in July 2012, these foal games will no longer work. See the ALL NEW foal games here.These foal games have been devised since the major changes by Howrse in April 2011. With the removal of the saltstone, the removal of the two-carrot bonus and the increase in gains from the 'double lesson' the whole way foals are trained has changed. So it's great news that StaciMM has come up with these foal games to allow for these changes. So a big thanks to her, and here is her guide. We've tested it and it works perfectly:
This will work for any size horse/pony and should NOT result in a seriously overweight/unhealthy horse.
Board your foal in a centre with carrots & clean, fertile meadows, and make sure morale is 100% when you put the foal to bed at 6 months old.
Put your horse to bed in the meadow each night. If the temperature is under 10C put your horse to bed in the box.
NOTE: Your horse will now need a companion to be able to do these games.

At most ages you are feeding a little less than recommended so as to get ready to overfeed at 18 mos. You MUST feed 14 pounds at 18 months to be able to put your horse to bed with 20% energy. Do not feed more than 4 pounds on each day when it says to feed just 4 pounds. The horse is eating a little in the pasture, and will be at a good/healthy weight when games are done. A pony (or small horse) may need to be underfed slightly at 20 months.So good luck with your foal games. As long as you follow these instructions carefully, you will be rewarded with a perfect 1.2 GP gain on your horse.

ReplyDeleteThis method has worked fine for both me and Patsy on many foals so far.
If you play these games in the winter you do need to be careful and make sure that the EC's pastures have good cleanliness and fertility and that you put your foal to bed in the box each night, not the meadow.
Make sure you keep an eye on your foals health and morale throughout the games. If they drop below 90% you must stop and ensure you make your foal better before continuing.

Does this method work for shetlands aswell? Whenever I do the first part of games on my 2 foals (1 sheltie UNI and 1 PSH UNI) It can't play 7hr games because it takes away -99.5% of the foals energy and my two foals (Even while being perfectly happy, good energy, good EC etc) only have 97% energy at that point so I can't Play for 7hrs... Is it because they are uni's?

It should work for all breeds. If you're having trouble on the first day you need to check that the EC you're in has 100% fertile and clean fields.
ReplyDeleteIt may also help to wait until Spring with the smaaller breeds as your foal will get more food from the pasture.

ReplyDeleteIt worked well on Beauty of Time, I just had to feed her 1 extra pound of feed so she would have enough energy to continue. (8 mos.) But it went perfect after that! Amazing. Would this work for training, only adjusting the amount of feed and length of training? If possible I'd like to help with guides, because I love the challenge, and my horses would probably need it. I can't wait because I'm trying to breed the best Irish Hunters around. So far, I'm doing good! I'm only starting the actual breeding part, so I'll need some help. Some ideas:

ReplyDeleteI could not play with my horse for 7 hours it took 105% energy. Does that have something to do with the EC im in? It has 100% cleanliness 100% space and 99% firtility I dont think you can get pastures better than that. Is there some thing im missing? I followed the directions excatly. It is in the fall but I always put her to bed in the box. It worked great with my other horse. THANKS!

What about winter foal games?
ReplyDeleteWinter foal games are the same these days - just put your horse to bed in the box instead of the meadows at night.
ReplyDeleteYou will need to be careful with the EC you are in though - if the meadows aren't 100% fertile, in the winter some of the smaller breeds aren't getting enough energy to do all their games.
So it's safest to wait until Spring/Summer to play with your foal unless you've tried and tested this method with your particular breed.

I did the exact same thing with both my foals and one ended up with 20% engry and the other had 13% so now im stuffed and i wont be able to train that foal!

ReplyDeleteHave your checked your EC's fields? They must be 100% fertile and 100% clean for this method to work. Also make sure you're doing games in Spring or Summer as sometimes people are finding their horses aren't getting enough energy from the pasture.
Make sure you put your foal to bed the day before you start the games with 100% morale.
If they're still not working then try and get a box with a shower in as this 10% energy on all of your actions.

Huh. At 1 year 4 months, even after following all the instructions, my filly, Pi, woke up with a low amount of energy, and I can't do the 10 hours of games. I have to restart all over again with another filly :(

Does anyone have a training schedule for Trakehners or one that would work for a Trakehner mare? I have really slacked off in the blupping of my other horses! Most are less than 10 years old, but I plan to blup them all this summer. I really want to blup my Trakehner in a few days, so please send any advice or guides to linusnlucy!

linusnlucy - Trakehner's top 3 skills are gallop, jump and stamina so just as a quick idea I'd train in dressage, jumping and speed, then do your XC and gallop races, train in stamina, train in gallop and then do your long gallop and steep slope rides.

At 1 year 6 months the horse will have to be bedded after 2200 which results in low morale the folowing day. Does morale affect the amount of skill gain by the horse? If so,then what must be done?

ReplyDeleteLow morale does not affect skill gain. It just means that per hour of training your horse uses more energy. Low health however does affect skill gain so you should never train until they have 100% health.

ReplyDeleteIf you find your horse not having enough energy at the end of a day then something has gone wrong. It may be your EC - fields must be 100% clean and fertile. It may be the weather - it needs to be over 10C if you put your horse to bed in the meadow. Or you may have just misread something - note that it changes to 1/2 an hour in the meadow at 1 year 4 months.
I can only do my best to try and help you on here. This method has worked for me and others hundreds of times. Give it a go on another foal and see if you can figure out what happened.

(it required over 100% energy) Does the cleanliness or fertility of the meadow make a difference? It's working fine on my Lusitano. Or what about the kind of companion? My QH has a sparrow, the Friesian has a giraffe, and the Lusitano has dog. I'll try it on my Paints and Gypsy Vanner when I get a chance

pixelbgood - once you've put them in an EC (with 100% clean and fertile meadows) put them out in the meadow as much as possible. This is great for their morale. You can put them out until they've eaten all the fodder they need.

I have another foal game schedule I used to use that works as well, but was overfeeding my shetties so they got too fat to contine. I like this one, because it doesn't overfeed, but I am a little disappointed in the fact that the next "day" or two months or whatever, and until you get the morale back up, you really can't do anything.

This worked amazing on my 2nd generation foal. ReplyDeleteIt usually works great on my horses, but I have had a few Connemara's that were underweight at 1yr 6mos. So I just gave them 21 lbs instead of the 14, and they were fine.

When you say feed your foal four pounds, do you mean 0.5kg (because thats as close to 0.4kg as there is), or do you mean 4kg?

Also, (haha, sorry for all the questions), when it does play with your foal for 7 hours, this will take away over 94% of energy, leaving me with only 6%. Will this increase to over 20% with the carrot, stroke and water etc? Or do I have to put my horse to bed with under 20% energy?

By 4 pounds (and any other feeds stated) we mean 4 pounds - feed is given in pounds on the international version. This equates to 2kg for you - make sure you translate the others correctly or your foal might end up the wrong weight!

And to your final question - yes that's the point of the stroke, carrot and water afterwards - if you follow the method, it will work!

So I followed this with two foals of mine and it didn't work either time probably because I had to mix the order one time on each foal. I had to water them before I could play with them because they were 1 or 0.2 below what would take for them to play for the selected amount of time. Really starting to absolutely hate this objective!!!

ReplyDeleteYou go to your horse's GP before and see what is is. Let's say it's GP was 650.00 before games. After games you would go back to it's GP and if it says 651.20, it will have "worked" on your horse.

I did this with my Gpsey Vanner and will be will all of the yearlings and newcomers.
ReplyDeleteThis worked well on my foal. Only got 1.08 gp gain as I boarded before I found this and boarded my foal somewhere with no carrots so i couldn't play the games for quite as long to allow for that. So apart from me being silly, it worked perfectly :)

I had only used 23 hours of my day, and I was kinda frustrated that I had wasted all the time and aging points to try this. I made Gus, my pony, play for another hour. He has 19 energy, but I did it! ReplyDeleteIt doesn't matter what companion you use. If your foal does not have enough energy to complete the seven hours of games, it means he did not have 100% morale. If you read the instructions carefully at the top it tells you how essential it is that your horse has 100% morale before you begin games.

This is so frustrating! I spent tons of aging points getting a good filly, and, this has happened to me before, now matter what I do, Carrot, Turnip, great EC, blah blah blah the horse only has 83% morale upon waking up at eight months, so I have to try again! My aging points are going down the drain! Please help!

ReplyDeleteI can't do 10 hours of play on the 1yr 6mnths! :/ my foal doesn't have enough energy and I tried it on two! Someone please help!

When I did this I followed directions every step but when I did it I got .3 fewer than needed
ReplyDeletei am using this on my horse and it says it is too fat don't feed it anything do i still feed it the 4 pounds or do i feed it nothing
ReplyDeleteIf you're still using this method you need to keep feeding what it tells you otherwise it won't work properly.
ReplyDeleteOnce you've finished these games feed your horse nothing until the warning about him being too fat goes away.

ReplyDeletethis is just a quick tip i did with my horse to help with the energy and moral at 18 months.
If you put a Philotes' Stroke (p. stroke)on your foal you can stroke twice, alowing you to get 30 extra minuts of game time in at the end of the day. If you keep track of the GP and figure out the gain as of 16 months, before you start anything for the day, you will have more GP gain than without the P. Stroke. That way you can finish with full GP gain at 16 months by 22:00 instead of 24:00, witch will leave your horse with pleanty of energy and moral for the rides the next day :)
example:
My horse , Don't Slow Me, started with 1505.45 GP. At the end of the day at 14 months she had 1506.4 GP. 1506.42 - 1505.45 = .97 GP gain at 14 months. then at 16 months i watch the GP close, folowing the schedule (i din't do the 3o min, meadow, instead i did drink), untill i got my full GP. gain. Witch left me with 1506.65 (1.2 GP Gain). This way your horse will be in perfect sape the next day :)
So hear is the altered schedule for 1.2 GP gain with a Philotes' Stroke.

Notice that the last day you only stroke once and do 1 hr. less games and no 30. min games at the end.
This should work, as i used it this way on my horse and it worked good.

ReplyDeleteThese things never work for me! No matter what I do! I always end up overfeeding the horses or making them loose morale. I just wanted to pass the Objective, that's all!

ReplyDeleteI've been following this guide for my purebred Spanish horse but when I got to 1 year 2 months on this I read the part about you should be feeding it under what your supposed to but I've been ending up over feeding while following this guide. Should i keep following it?
ReplyDeleteon the last day It told me I couldn't feed my horse over 10kg of fodder but I just fed 9.5 and her energy was 100%. She was fine and it worked =D

ReplyDeleteBit annoyed with howrse, because of the new energy that the fodder gives. Didn't get my horse to bed with 20% energy on the last day, so now at 1yr8mth she has 80%energy and 82%morale :(

ReplyDeleteI'm saanderson on Howrse and this method is what I have been using and I really am getting results on my Arabs. I am trying to have really good Arabs in the game. Right now I am getting more into quality, not quantity, so I am selling almost all of my Arabs with less than 1500 GP, so if anyone wants some, feel free, they're probably going cheap for their quality and I used this method on them, as well as the other training methods that are on this website. Most of them are not fully trained and BLUPed, but I think one or two are.

I would like to say that you didn't fator in that at 1 year 6 months the horse grows up and you can no longer play games. Cause it doesn't work.

They do state at the top of this post that since July 2012 these games no longer work. You need to read the post properly. Don't blame the writers if you can't read!
